SIR JOSEPH WARD’S CAREER 1856—Born at Emerald Hill, Melbourne (April 26). 1869—Entered Civil Service as telegraph messenger. 1878—At the age of 22 elected to Campbell Town Borough Council. 1881—Elected Mayor of Campbell Town. 1887—Elected to Parliament as member for Awarua. 1891—Appointed Postmaster-Gen-eral. 1893 Appointed Colonial Treasurer under Mr. Seddon. 1894 Sponsored Bill giving Government guarantee to Bank of New Zealand during financial crisis. 1896—Misfortune in business affairs caused retirement from Parliament. 1899—Returned to Parliament and became Postmaster-General. 1901— Knighthood conferred. Became acknowledged second-in-command of Liberal forces. 1902 Acting-Premier during Mr. Seddon’s absence at coronation of King Edward. 1906 Became Premier in first Ward Ministry, 1907 Instrumental in having status of New Zealand raised from Colony to Dominion. Represented New Zealand at liViperial Conference. Appointed Privy Councillor. 1907-11—Received Freedom of Edinburgh, London, Bristol and Manchester. 1909—Presented H.M.S. New Zealand to British Government on behalf of the Dominion. 1911— Baronetcy bestowed during his visit to Imperial Conference at London. 1912 Returned with reduced majority, resigned office of Prime Minister (March 12). Party defeated on no-confid-ence motion (July). 1915—Returned to Cabinet during period of National Government as Minister of Finance and Postmaster - General (August 12). 1917-18—Attended Imperial War Conference and visited Western front. 1919—Withdrew from National Ministry (August 21). 1919—Defeated at Awarua after having held the seat since 1887 (December). 1919—Member of N.Z. Delegation to ar * 9 P«»ce Conference. 1923—Unsuccessfully contested Tauranga by-election (March 29). 1925 Re-entered • Parliament as member for Invercargill (November). 1928—Chosen as Leader of the Ignited Party (September 1928—United Party victory at gen®ral election (November 14). 1928—Sworn in as Prime Minister (December 10). 1930.—Resigned Prime Ministership (May 15). Died at Wellington (July 8).
