ROXY
“THE MELODY MAN” Tonight is the last night of the season at the Roxy Theatre of “Song of Love." This splendid talkie introduces Belle Baker, the American vaudeville player, in new songs, and it is accompanied by interesting supporting talkies. Unlike many recent talking films, Columbia’s “The Melody Man.” although a musical picture, does not rely on catchy song numbers. colourful stage settings and a galaxy of ghis to “put it over.” On tho contrary, the stage and its people has nothing at all to do with the action or the plot of “The Melody Man.” The story fabric is exceptionally unique and it is refreshing to see something in film form that is not only said to b© “different,” but really is just that. “The Melody Man” has received excellent treatment at the hands of The producer, the director and the cast. Consequently, it blossoms forth as a picture that is well worth seeing and hearing. The battle that is being waged between the classics and jazz is the basis of the plot, A pretty romance is interwoven which is not “sloppy,” but true to life. “The Melody Man” which, by the way. lias several scenes in beautiful technicolour, will be screened at the Roxy Theatre tomorrow.
June Collyer has been selected 10 play opposite Gary Cooper in “Civilian Clothes.” the stars next all-talking production. Rehearsals are now under way at the Hollywood studios and filming will commence shortly. No other supporting cast selections Uaye yet been made.
