A DUAL SUCCESS

LORD DEWAR’S ANXIOUS MOMENT The late Lord Dewar was a firm believer in. the saying- that the surest way to lose a friend is to lend liim money or give him a racing tip. He told a friend of mine* csays an English writer) that on one occasion when he disregarded this advice, the mental stress he suffered was almost unbearable. In 1900, when he was contesting an election, he told a deputation of costermongers that he believed his horse Forfarshire would win the One Thousand Guineas, extracting the promise from their spokesman that the conversation should not go beyond the four walls. The following day the rashness of his words was borne upon him, when one canvasser after another came up to tell him that the inhabiants of St. George’s were “on Forfarshire to a man.” On the day of the race a buff envelope, one of a continuous stream of telegrams, was handed to Lord Dewar. “Something warned me that this enve-v lope contained my fate,” he told my friend, “and though I am not a nervous man it was some time before I could tear the envelope open. There, staring me in the face, were the words, ‘Forfarshire won by three lengths.’ The odds against my winning the election had been four to one. I came out at the head of the poll with a majority of 296.'” MR. HAZLETT’S HORSES SEVEN FOR NEW SEASON Included in Mr. IV. T.
