Fortunately there were no serious accidents, although many of the motor-cyclists had heavy falls. The danger '/.one started outside the site of the old Symonds Street l'ost office and extended lo lhe .ianetion of Eden Terrace and .Mount Kdc.i Koad. The thick sprinkling ot clay hod been carried on to the roadway by the lorries from the Post Office site, and with the passing - of traffic it was soon spread for some yards down the road. The first shower of rain shortly after 30 o'clock gave the road a greasy surface, and from then until midnight, cars' and motor-cycles skidded wildly as they passed. Ir. was most remarkable that none of the cars hit the telegraph poles in the vicinity, although many of them came to rest only inches i away. Two motor-cars running abreast both skidded at the same moment and narrowly missed colliding when they swung about, completely out of control. Several cars skidded completely round. The motor-car drivers were more fortunate than the motor-cyclists, four of which, during a space of five minutes, were thrown from their machines. One pililon passenger, a young woman, toppled off a machine and suffered a slight cut on the leg. Later, a constable was stationed on the City side of the dangerous patch and warned motorists as they came alonsr. This relieved the nosition. and this morning, when all the clay was washed off. the road was quite safe.
