STATUE OF VENUS

REMOVAL FROM SYDNEY GARDENS It is probable that the New’ South Wales Government will order a public inquiry into the circumstances of the removal of the statue of Venus from the Botanic Gardens, in Sydney. The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Thorby, stated recently he had directed the police to investigate an allegation that a certain statue, at one time located in the Botanic Gardens, had been found in grounds adjoining the Lapstone Hotel on the Blue Mountains. The Minister added that from reports in his possession the statue was originally removed from its position in the gardens to the packing shed, on account of its having been disfigured by vandals. It was subsequently or dered to be destroyed eight years ago. It seems that instead of being destroyed. said Mr. Thorby, it was given to a certain person, who had it erected in its present position. “Other inquiries are being made, and the whole matter will be yioroughly investigated,” added the Minister. “Up to the present about 20 persons have been questioned on matters associated with the administration of the Botanic Gardens.”
