CHILDREN GIVE BRIGHT CONCERT FOR WOMEN’S PROGRESSIVE LEAGUE FUNDS A very successful pupils’ recital was given by Miss Ebba Gunman in the Palais Theatre, Northcote, in aid of funds for the social work in the Borough of the Xorthcote Women’s Progressive League. The stage was beautifully decorated with coloured streamers and shaded lights. REMUERA BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Remuera branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held on Thursday afternoon and was presided over by Mrs. Kasper. The following resolution was passed unanimously: “The members of this union view with alarm the laxity of supervision in some of the dancing halls of the City and suburbs, and desire to make a strong protest against the use of intoxicating liquor in these places of amusement.”

TE AWAMUTU CROQUET CLUB MARKS CLOSE OF SEASON WITH “AT HOME” PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES There was a good attendance at the “at home” in the Te Awamutu Town Hall given by the executive of the Croquet Club, to mark the closing of the very successful 1929-30 season. The following contributed to the musical programmes:—Mesdames R. Metcalfe, J. Oliphant and 11. Judge (Rualiui), while Mrs. C. M. Newton delighted with an elocutionary item. The accompaniments were played by Mrs. J. Hawkins and Miss Savill. The following trophies, won during the season, fi were presented to the winners by Mrs. H. de R. Y.W.C.A. ACTIVITIES NATIONAL BOARD MEETS AT WELLINGTON SPORTS POLICY DISCUSSED The National Board of Uie Young Women's Christian Association of New Zealand has recently concluded its midyear meeting at Wellington. "Representatives from Auckland, New Plymouth. Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch, Timaru, and Dunedin were present, the national president. Dr. Sylvia Chapman, presiding. Her Excellency Lady Bledisloe, Dominion patroness of the association, was unable to be present at the meetings on account of indisposition, but appointed a time to visit the officers of the association at the new headquarters office. Business connected with the world's Y.W.C.A. was presented by Miss Ella Fair, who reported on the recent move of the international headquarters to Geneva. The consideration of the association’s world fellowship policy occupied much of the time of the conference, matters connected with *Miss Moncrieff’s work in China and Alias Gavin’s work in India being dealt with. A letter was received from the association in Japan expressing the thanks of the Japanese Association for New Zealand hospitality to Miss Yuki Kimura, and the conference unanimously decided to assure the Japanese Association that Miss Kimuru’s visit had served to develop and strengthen the sense of friendliness in New Zealand toward Japanese women and girls. Miss Jean JJegg, general secretary of the Auckland Association, was commissioned to make inquiries about the conditions of Indian girls in Fiji on her forthcoming journey to Honolulu, where she is to undertake the duties of director of the international social service section of the Pan-Pacific Conference. Mrs. Ernest Dawson, chairman of the National Girls’ Work Committee, reported on the mavked development of the Girl Citizen movement, an increase of 400 rew girl members being recorded during the month of June. An outstanding achievement was the publication “The Girl Citizen,” a New Zealand book for New Zealand girls,
written by Miss Leila Bridgman, Xational Girls’ Work secretary. The conference put on record its deep appreciation of Miss Bridgman’s work, which girl citizens and leaders of girls’ clubs will find a treasury of helpful suggestions. A discussion on the sports policy of the association was opened by Miss Begg, a resolution being carried that each association be recommended to organise a sports department. An important session of the conference dealt with the question of co-oper-ating with the Y.M.C.A. to provide a. programme of social and cultural activities for young men and young women. This discussion was opened by Mrs. 11. D. Bennett and Miss Annie Tocker, who emphasised the need to provide opportunity for wholesome intercourse for later adolescents with a view' to friendship and mutual development and respect. The conference considered a scheme for the training of secretaries, and resolved that a short theoretical course should bo arranged to follow a six months’ period of directed practical , work. The advisability of a university ; course for social service was discussed, 1 and it was decided to co-operate on | this matter with the Women’s National j Council and the Federation of Univer- I sity Women. MEETINGS OF WOMEN’S INSTITUTES .V monthly meeting - of the Wellsford Women’s Institute was held in the local hall recently. The president. Mrs. W. R. Grant, was in the chair. After business matters had been dealt with the meeting took the form of a social afternoon. Community singing and a competition arranged by the secretary, Mrs. Waldrom. were enjoyed. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. King, Mrs. S. Smith and Mrs. Spindler. TE IIOE BRANCH The Te Hoe Women’s Institute met on Wednesday at the residence of Mrs. Twining. Mrs. Cuff presided. Business matters were discussed and it was decided to hold a brin'g-and-buy social in August. A parcel of clothing, made by the members of the institute, was dispatched to Sister Esther. During the afternoon five hundred was played. Mesdames Green and Twining were the hostesses.
