This semi-final was full of incident. Fairly even play was the order up to the oth head, with luck going to Eden, who led 6—3. Head 6 was eventful, Birkenhead drawing well for a score, lying 5 when the skips changed over. Francis got timbered with his first, while Harkin drew another, but Francis with his last, got in to the head for the third shot. Harkin, declining to try an impossible draw on the straight hand, elected to drive one of his own on to the opposing wood to force it out. and got it, collecting a much-needed 5 and putting him 2 ahead. On the 7th head, after much fine play by both front divisions. Francis, down on the head, forced kitty back toward his own, without altering things, but bis next, a typical piledriver, got kitty through for 2 and a Three extra heads were played, and on the first Francis’s team - were all on the job and a nice 4 was the result- The next head was the critical one. Harkins’s had got two on the jack, as did his second player, and his third, all well bunched except one, a foot in front, while the other team ran past on a big drawing hand. Francis got the third shot with his first, a nice draw to save, which Harkin nicely cut out to leave himself still 6. Francis put in a pile-driver, missing the green and cuttings Harkins’s front bowl into the nest and forcing kitty into the centre, where it spun round for quite a time and then slithered out of the nest over to a wing bowl of Francis. , . . Harkin, undismayed, drew the shot, but it was a poor substitute for the 6 he had for those few seconds. The last head shaped badly for Francis, who was 5 down when he went to play; but he picked the port nicely and cleaned out sufficient of his opponents’ woods to prevent him winning, the game ending 12—11 in Francis's favour.
