Heavy rain has fallen, and the course and tracks at Trentham are now soft, though not as soft as usually is tho case in winter. Nevertheless, it is assured now that the course will be heavy when racing opens on Tuesday, so punters can dismiss from their minds the ideas they were entertaining of tho recognised mudlarks being at a disadvantage this winter. This was an off morning for work of interest. Prince Lu was schooled over half a dozen hurdles. He jumped cleanly and quickly. Apache, Taunamoe, Paris and Waitaunalia were out doing easy work. Staghunter has come into favour with tho track watchers on account of good work on the tracks. He will certainly be hard to beat if lie strikes tho best form he displayed early in hia career. Knee Troublesome Conjurer 11. is still troubled by his enlarged knee, and there is no certainty now that he will race at the meeting. But it is looked upon as almost definite that ho will be sent to Australia to race. * Among the improvements at Trentham is tho roofing of the new outside stand. This is still incomplete, but it will be near enough to completion to afford shelter from the weather. Mendip is increasing in favour for the Whyte Handicap, to be run on Tuesday, and others fancied are Black Duke, Maori Boy, True Blood. Best Friend and Ranelagh. There is a likelihood of Ranelagh starting favourite. Favourites for the Trentham Hurdles are Mister Gamp, Prince Lu and Taumai, while those most considered in tho Stewards’ Handicap are Havering, Consent, Panther, Staghunter, Limosin, Hopwood and Marble King Black Duke’s Mission While nothing definite v is known here as to which race, the Whyte Handicap or the Stewards’ Handicap, Black Duke will contest on Tuesday, it is freely assumed that lie will run in the mile event, tho Whyte Handicap.
