TAXING LUXURIES
DEBATE IN LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL DEFENCE ECONOMIES Press Association WELLINGTON, Friday. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. today. The Coroners Amendment Bill, the Law Practitioners Amendment Bill, tho New Zealand University Amendment Bill, the Judicature Amendment Bill, the Offenders* Probation Amendment Bill, and the Prevention of Crime (Borstal Institutions Establishment) Amendment Bill were read a second time pro forma, and referred to the Statutes Revision Committee. Resuming the debate on the Ad-dress-in-Reply motion, the Hon. A. S. Malcolm (Southland) said he was delighted to know that the Government intended to effect economies in defence. He did not see any necessity for training an army in times of peace. The Hon. 1.. M. Isitt (Canterbury) supported a tax on luxuries. He condemned the present taxation of racing clubs as inequitable and suggested a further tax on amusements. He also thought that the liquor trade was not paying its fair share of taxation. The Hon. G. J. Garland (Auckland) expressed pleasure at the fact that the Government was showing inerrasing interest in land settlement. Referring to the defence system, he said there were too many men drawing large salaries. The council adjourned at 4.30 p.m. until 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday.
