KIDNAPPED FOR WEDDING
ALLEGED ATTEMPT TO COERr YOUNG IRISHMAN CHURCHYARD SCENE A charge of kidnapping a r I man, w ith the object of forcing Y S into a marriage, was heard at jv I arum. County Tipperary. The accused were Patrick fy, I Patrick, Martin Fitzgerald and cw topher HyaD, of Tipperary .j,™* ; Timothy Reardon, farm Donobill, Tipperary, and Edward <v roll, motor driver, Tipperary charged with aiding aud abetting five men were charged with caanT acy. The evidence was that an »r».. party kidnapped Thomas Wood, farm labourer, at the farmstead wL, he was employed, and brought hat with Mary Lizzie Brelgh (23), 4 t, mestic servant, to Solohead Chu six miles away, for the purpos/L getting the priest to marry the j,. While the party was wailing out™ the church for Mass to conclod, armed detectives drove up aa(l rested the men. Girl’s Evidence Lizzie Breigh, in evidence, said tlsince the alleged kidnapping had promised to marry her. Prefix to that she had told the local »• geant of police that she would t>cure a party of her relatives to con pel Woods to marry' her. iVoor emphatically de.dared that he wov not marry Breigh. He denied resir-" sibility for her trouble. DescrJiitthe alleged kidnapping. Woods stT that Ryan and Fitzgerald point* guns at him. Fitzgerald asked hi if he would marry the girl. He fused, and ran away, hut was hslu by three armed men. He then accot" panied the party to a car where ft. girl was sitting. Men Surrender Police evidence was that when the arrived at the church and shoute “Hands up,” Ryan went behind a ml bordering the church grounds, zj, pointed a revolver at them. A secojr call of “Hands up” by the pofi~ resulted in the surrender of tha Fitzpatrick. Fitzgerald, Ryan ai’i Reardon were returned for trial. bs : being refused. Carroll, who acted x< motor driver to the party, was charged.
