IN SORRY PLIGHT

YORKSHIRE FALLS TO SEVERE BOWLING AUSTRALIA’S HANDY POSITION Reed. 10.15 a.m. LONDON, Thursday. The Australian cricketers, after making a bad start in the return match against Yorkshire at Bradford yesterday, took the total to 302, of which 294 were made yesterday for nine wickets. Ponsford made 143. When the game was resumed this morning only eight runs had been added to the overnight score of 294 when Walker was stumped. A’Beckett had made 30, and was not out. When Yorkshire opened its first innings, it fared badly at the hands of Grimmett and Hornibrook. Four wickets quickly fell for 43 runs. Grimmett, who took all 10 wickets in the previous match, and A’Beckett completely routed the leading county. Leyland, the test aspirant, W. Barber and the veteran Rhodes were the only batsmen who faced Grimmett confidently, and a struggling innings ended at 3.40. The Australian fielding was very bad, about half a dozen chances being missed, or Yorkshire’s score would have been even less. COUNTY FOLLOW ON The county followed oil, being 156 behind. * Their score in the first innings was their worst this season. They again started badly, Hurwood shattering Mitchell’s stumps. Rain stopped play for half an hour. Hurwood, upon resumption, claimed two more victims. Pie was now showing splendid form, and causing all the batsmen trouble. Grimmett came on at 56 and immediately baffled the batsmen. W. Barber and Robinson fell victims to his wiles. The South Australian secured his 100th wicket of the tour when Bradman took a great catch at the boundary, to dismiss Dennis. Hurwood got Wood before stumps were drawn, leaving Yorkshire in a sorry plight. The scores are:— AUSTRALIA First Innings. WOODFULL, c Wood, b Dennis ....
