Goal-Kicking

Fuller’s success for Wairarapa against Hawke’s Bay has called attention in a very loud voice to the value of place-kicking as a match-winning factor in Rugby. It will be remembered that in this particular match Wairarapa scored 30 points to Hawke’s Bay’s 22. Of the winner’s total 24 points came from Fuller’s boot, a practical lesson in the value of placekicking. Hawke’s Bay actually had the best of the game, scoring live tries to their opponents three, hut they had not a Fuller in the team, and the final result accordingly went against them. Last year Fuller won a Ranfurly Shield match for Wairarapa with his boot, beating Auckland for the trophy. Fuller's boot is reminiscent of the days of "Billy” 'Wallace, of Wellington. and J. Dufty, the Auckland placekick of more than twenty years ago. As a New Zealand representative Wallace kicked 124 goals, including conversions, penalties, etc., while Dufty will be remembered from the famous parrot erv from the bank: "Give it to Dufty." Dufty never represented New Zealand, but he secured a place in the North Island team in 1906, and later on became famous as a League player, and represented New Zealand in that code, being very successful as a place-kick.
