Ponies to Meet Teachers
FINE MATCH TOMORROW Good Rugby Programme SPECTACULAR football is promised followers at Eden Park tomorrow, when Ponsonby, the championship leader, will meet Training College in the principal match of the day. The first round clash between these teams, which ended 10—5 in Ponies’ favour, provided one of the brightest games of the season, but tomorrow Ponsonby''s strength will he substantially reduced by the absence of its skipper, Lucas, from the hacks, and McWilliams from the forwards.
In the latter stages of the first round there lias been a conspicuous improvement in Training College’s combination, particularly in the backs, who are fast and dashing, and it was signillcant that Grammar, another leading team, scraped a point margin victory over teachers last Saturday. The curtain-raiser between Grid ton and Varsity should provide some bright, open football in which the combination of the speedy students’ rearguard is expected to be the decidOther games on the park will do between Technical and City, and Col lege Rifles and Grammar. HOW THEY STAND FIRST ROUND IN RUGBY SENIOR B TEAMS SHOWING FORM The following table shows the position of the Senior B Rugby teams at the conclusion of the first round of the competition:
th© substantial lead of four points, but as this team has had two very close games the position is full of possibilities. Marathon is a well-bal-anced team, strong in both divisions
and, thanks to splendid team-work, is worthily in pride of position. Otahuliu, a young team with a splendid pack of forwards, should show improvement in the second round and may prove the hardest team for Marathon to defeat. Parnell is a greatly improved young team, a trifle on the light side, and with average luck should make things interesting for the leaders. Eden has some excellent material and has done remarkably well considering that this is its first season in the senior grade. It will be remembered that this team gave a splendid exposition of the game in its game with Marathon as a curtain-raiser at Eden Park. North Shore has put up a great fight against the leading teams, and with a shade of luck would have obtained more championship points. The game against Otahuliu was a splendid one, and would have done credit to some of the leading teams in the senior A section. Both Manukau and Varsity are in tho unfortunate position that they have had, at times, to supplement their senior A teams, but as the season progresses they should do better. Suburbs lias unfortunately struck a lean period this year, but with the stalwarts this club has, the position is only a passing one. This team has a good pack of forwards but is lacking in good inside backs. Tramways is a much younger team this year and probably owes its position at th© bottom of the ladder to lack of experience. Next season the team should do well, and the executive of the club is to be commended in persevering with the younger players.
JUNIOR NOTES An exceptionally keen struggle is being staged in the third intermediate grade, in which 20 teams are participating in the three sections. The first round, which has just concluded, leaves Grafton, Grammar B and Otahuhu with unbeaten records in A, B and C sections respectively, with Grammar A, Y.M.C.A. A and Manukau, who have each suffered one defeat, as respective runners-up. The junior teams of the Otaliuhu Club are upholding the good record of the club in the competition matches this season. The third grade intermediate team has, up to the present, not tasted defeat, and with the second round well on the way, there is a possibility of its heading the list. One of the chief reasons for the team’s success is the systematic training each week. The fourth grade fifteen is well up the ladder, having suffered only one loss and one draw. On account of the difficulty in fielding a fifth grade team, the officials of the club had no hesitation in withdrawing the grade from the competitions. The sixth graders will also be knocking when the final figures go up. To date they have one loss and one draw against them. Championship points in each of the following grades at the end of the first round were:
