CLUB’S HISTORY WILL BE TOLD IN SPORTS EDITION TOMORROW 1 1 BEGINNING OF THE CODE The story of the Newton Rangers Rugby League Football Club, one of the foundation clubs of the code in Auckland, will be told in the (Sports edition of THE SUN tomorrow evening. In addition, many interesting facts about the code itself in its young days will be related. Reference will he made to the tour of A. H. Baskerville’s “All Gold” side, and the subsequent exhibition games which saw' the code established in New Zealand. Tho meeting at which the Newton Club came into existence was held in July, 1909. Jt was three years before the team won tho championship, in 1912, with what was considered a very fine club team. Another peak year was 1919, when Newton gathered in tho Roopc Rooster. Tho club has had associated with it from time to time many players who have starred in both Rugby codes, from George Gillett, a 1905 All Black, Mat Hooper, AY”. Mackrell, Alan Blakey, “Bolla” Francis, down to AV. Somers, C. Dufty and R. stars of more recent years. 11l addition, tho article will feature fixtures of the; teams of 1912, 1919 and the outstanding players of the club’s history.
