DRUNKEN THEFT
PROMISE TO GIVE UP LIQUOR £3 FINE IMPOSED A visit to a shoemaker’s shop, where he had left with another man’s shoes, resulted in Raymond Woodward’s appearance in the Police Court this morning. Accused was fined £ 3 for theft. Woodward, a labourer, aged 32, pleaded guilty, through Air. Sullivan, to the theft of a pair of shoes,valued at 17s 6d and belonging to Allan Rainger, on June 11. Chief-Detective Hammond said the shoes had been left with a bootmaker by a firm of mercers for a customer. Woodward had asked for the shoes, which were given to him. “He has quite a long list," added the chiefdetective. “He is given to drink and he lives by his wits." Air. Sullivan pointed out that accused’s last conviction was three and a-half years ago. He was drunk when he took the shoes and actually had a pair of his own being repaired'in town at the time. The man had been recently working on public works and counsel asked that he be not sent to gaol.
Accused agreed to take out a pro hibition order and was fined £3 in de fault 14 days’ imprisonment.
