EPSOM FAVOURITE
| TOM PINCH IN DEMAND I BIG TASK FOR YOUNGSTER ! Writins a. few days before the hanfli. caps for the big A.J.C. spring carnival events made their appearance. a j Sydney critic said: Hackers and bookmak»*rs alike ffoCa . I to be determined that Tom Pinch *haii Ibe the early favourite for the AJ.c I Epsom Handicap. He has already j been coupled in dpubles with favoured I’ Metropolitan candidates. Apparently the Epsom is to be his first mission is the spring. W hether backers will be so keen to j bark him after they have looked at th. I weights next Monday is hard to say (Tom Pinch has been given &.». p,. , same weight os Gesture.> It is cerI tain that he will not be thrown into i tho race. Although ’ the boom- that j is on the gelding w ill not influence Ur. Fred Wilson. A.J.C. handicapper. in his adjustments, it is fairly certain that Tom Pinch will need to be out of th* ordinary to win. Due For Another Win llis admirers say that he is all iha^ : and then some more. If he wins the Epsom Handicap he will be the first three-year-old to succeed in that race since the late Joe Burton’s Dare Devil won in 1892. Thirty-eight years is a long time an t a three-year-old is certainly due tor another win. It is only fair to the t.iree-ycar-old-to say that not many of the really first-class gallopers of that age hav<. tackled the Epsom. In the spring owners of tbree-year-oJds usually turto thoughts of Derbies and cups. r. a smart galloper of that age is not considered likely to win the Derbj*. he or she is invariably kept for something easier than the Epsom Handicap—onof the hardest sprint races in Australia to win. _ Previous Runners Weight-for-age for a three-year-old gelding in October—when the Epsom is run—is 7.10. Mr. Wilson is unlikely to give Tom Pinch more than weight-for-age. ana. i taking a line through his handieappin. of previous good two-year-olds in th* , Epsom, he may not even get tha* I weight. One of the last three-year-olds to l* | placed in an was Quintus, in : ]523. That gelding, who was owned iat the time by Darcy Eccles, carried i 7.5 and was unfortunate enough to ro:» I into a champion in Claro, who carried 1 8.7. a luxurious weight for him. Toxr j Pinch may have better performance* than Quintus as a two-year-old. [although it is doubtful. Good Form Quintus won the March Nursery up the straight at Felmington, and he tealso second in the Gibson Carmichael Stakes, second in the Easter Stakes third In th© Champagne Stakes, and hi? last win for the season was the mile Nursery Handicap at Rand wick with 8.12, beating a good field. It’s an interesting problem, and onh one man can settle it. And he won : tell —until next Monday morning. Big Money Refused An offer of 3.09© guineas was recently refused for the well-performed Tom Pinch. The black gelding is held on lea?* and the owner and lessee intimated that they were not anxious to consider the offer. Tom Pinch has no calssic engagements. His connections apparently think he will reach the best form in other races, as S.OOOgns is a lot of money to refuse for a racehorse it these times. In four starts he ha? scored three wins, and he was third in the other race in which he competed.
