NOT IN CLASSICS CONQUEROR OF BOSWORTH SUCCESS OF PRESS GANG United P.A.—Dp Telegraph Copyright Reed. 10.40 a.m. LONDON, Tliurs. At the Newmarket meeting today the principal event resulted: PRINCESS OF WALES STAKES A sweepstake c>£ £3O each, with £2,000 added: three-year-olds N.O, four-year-olds 8.12, with penalties and allowances. One mile and a half. PRESS GANG (Lord Woolavi ngton), oh e. by Hurry On —Pifinella, 3yrs 1 BOSWORTH (Lord Derby), br c. by Son-in-Law —Serenissima. 4yrs .. 2 ALCESTER (Lord Harewood), br c, by Rochester—Advantage. 4yrs .. .. 3 Five started. Won by two lengths, four lengths separating second and third. Press Gang’s apparently decisive victory over the crack four-year-old Bosworth reveals the colt as a high-class performer. The winner was engaged in the Two Thousand Guineas, but did not start. He was not entered for the Herby, nor is he in the St. Leger on September 10. Fifinella, the dam of Press Gang, won both the Herby and Oaks at Newmarket during the war period, and the colt last season was considered one of England’s leading two-year-olds. The colt was then seventh on the list of winning horses, having won three races to the value of £7,090. A couple of years ago Lord AVoola vington raced a brilliant galloper in the Derby winner Coronach, whose duels with Lord Derby’s colt, Colorado, will be remembered. Bos worth won the Ascot Gold Cup last month, and that indicated that Lord Derby's horse would be at the top of his form, which makes Press Gang’s performance all the more impressive. On the other hand. Bosworth would be multeed in the maximum 141 b penalty, whereas Press Gang would bo penalised 51b only. This makes the weight of this pair: Bosworth 9.12, Press Gang 8.5. This advantage is a great one in favour of the three-year-old. The weight-for-age scale would see this pair carrying 9.0 and 7.13 respectively. Alcester’s owner. Lord Harewood. is better known as Viscount Lascellcs, the husband of Princess Mary. Last season Alcester failed to win any of his nine races, two seconds and a third being his best efforts. Lord Derby’s Fairway won the Princess of "Wales Stakes last year, the total value of the stake then being £2,630. Yesterday’s race was worth £3.090. of which the winner’s share was £2.G00. 'second £3OO and third £IOO The Derby winner. Blenheim, and the third horse in that classic. Diolite, were nominated for yesterday's event, but more than likely they did not start.
