HARBOUR BRIDGE PLAN

GOVERNMENT MAY AGAIN BE APPROACHED PRIVATE ENTERPRISE THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Mention of the Waitemata Harbour bridge project was made by the Hon. Jonathan Trevithick (Auckland) in making his maiden speech in the Legislative Council today. The recent commission came to the conclusion that the project was 20 years ahead of its time, said Mr. Trevithick. He took it that the confmission based its opinion on the cost of the bridge and the average number of vehicles which would use the throughfare. The Waitemata Harbour Bridge Committee was advised by its engineer that the cost of erecting the bridge would be about £813,000, with an addition £250,000 for the purchase of land and the formation of approaches. It was estimated that a bridge could b© erected for £1,063,000. “I mention this because I understand the Harbour Bridge Committee may approach the Government again asking for help, or, as an alternative, that private enterprise be allowed to undertake'the work,” said Mr. Trevithick.
