AWAPUNI NOTES
WORK OF HORSES FOR TRENTHAM ARROWHEAD TRAVELS Special to THE' SUS PALMERSTON X.. Today Bitterly cold conditions —an easterly wind making its presence felt prevailed for training operations at Awapuni on Tuesday morning, although the tracks were in great order. However. there was little £ terest. the morning being devoted to the jumpers. Brilliant Light and Glenrossie v. ere. however, partners in a six furlong gallop on the course proper, the llags being out very wide. The two Trentham candidates ran the full distance in 1.22. after covering the first three furlongs in 41. While Brilliant Light had a shade the advantage at the post, both recorded an attractive effort. Malahat and Merry Melody were sent along at a fast clip on the plough and G. New’s representatives should be in good order for next week's engagements at Trentliam. ~ The mentors third member. Terra Firma. who claims engagement in the Trial Plate, was given an easy task on the grass proper. A Handful Coon Bong ran home from the live, furlongs, picking up Braggart in the region of the half-mile peg, but the Hunting Song gelding bore in very badly and was eased up in the straight. A difficult customer to handle, he was trotted on the sand after his gallop by his mentor. R. E. Hatch. Hymesjtrason, who is in the hack steeplechase at Trentliam. moved quite attractively in a gallop with Askari, but he was not asked to jump. Mrs. McDonald has returned home from Napier Park, but the lady mentor did not ask anything serious of her members down to compete at Trcntham. A. Quinlivan likewise gave Winloch a light task, it being his intention not to ask anything further of her till the new season. For Gisborne J. Boyd, who took Arrowhead through to the Hawke’s Buy fixtures, did not bring the Arrowsmith gelding back to Awapuni, it being his intention to go on to the Gisborne meeting. It is problematical as to whether he will return to this centre. Great Lady was omitted from the weights for the Woburn Hack Handicap at Trentliam and a request had to be made to have the Bisogno marc included. The handicapper awarded her 9.5. The Awa pan! team which made the trip to Hastings and Napier Park fared quite well, for they won €3OO at the former fixture and €430 at the-lat-ter. Llyn Du was the principal contributor, the half-brother to the defunct Kalos annexing €305 in all, which raised his stake earnings for the season to €675. Although he had been doing well in his track schooling efforts, it was hardly anticipated locally that Llyn Du would rank as favourite at Napier I*ai k at his first appearance in the role. However, the faith evidenced was not misplaced. It: is not often finds a maiden jumper installed favourite at his first appearance in public, but Llyn Du was merely emulating the performance of an earlier inmate of the same stable, Locarno, who won at his initial essay over the battens at Ashhurst. when the success was likewise anticipated. Three on End J-hnce being put to the jumping game Corneroff lias made excellent progress .and it was not altogether surprising to find him capable of leading the field home in the hack steeples at Napier Park. With Winloch scoring in file succeeding event. Awapuni reg - istered three successive victories on tl e opening day. x Blue Paper and Arrowhead had to be content with very modest stake earnings, each running a second and a third for the modest sum of €ls Whereas the former was required to carry substantial poundages, the same excuse cannot be made fn r Arrowhead and it is now apparent that he is rot living up to bis track efforts. With Red Bank registering a wining performance at his first essay over country at Wanganui, good things were looked for from the All Red gelding, even though he might not prove at, home, over the longer distances. Red attended both the Hastings and Napier Park meetings, but a third at each fixture proved very disappointing. However, he may improve at Trent ham next week. GOOD PERFORMER BIG SPRING HANDICAPS Arapuni. who is being sent across from Western Australia to go into F. McGrath’s Randwick stables. is among the nominations for The Metropolitan and the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. A rising six-year-old gelding by Perseus from Werenda, Arapuni has been a profitable horse for his owner. Dr. T. Ambrose, and in 10 starts last season he won the mile and three furlongs W.A.T.C. November Handicap with 7st 131 b. the mile and a-half Imperial Handicap with Sst. after being fourth to Jomidar in the Perth Cup. and the mile and a-half Metropolitan Handicap with Sst 41b toward the end ol the season. In the latte; event Jem: 2.— started favourite, with Arapuni next, but the Cup winner was beaten out of a place. This season Arapuni has won three races, including tl mile and three•quarters W.A.T.C. Westralia Handicap. and it would appear that he is most at home in races a few furlongs less than two miles.
