LATE MR. GEORGE ALLSOP KEEN LIBERAL SUPPORTER A well-known champion of free trade and the "single tax” system, in his younger days, Mr, George Allsop, died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. S. S. Clarke,’ Shelly Beach Road, Herne Bay, at the age of 96. A cold contracted in the wet weather of a fortnight ago led to an attack of bronchitis, from which he died after 10 days’ illness. Mr. Allsop, who was borif in England, came out to the Dominion in the sailing ship Turakina in 1884, being

then 50 years of age. He celebrated his diamond wedding three years before his wife’s death 10 yars ago. On his arrival here Mr. Allsop took up farming in the Tamaki, after his retirement settling in Belgium Street. It was as a champion of the Liberal cause here that Mr. Allsop was bez.t known, being associated with many of the leading business men. He took a keen interest in politics right up to the last, retaining full use of all liis faculties. Mr. Allsop leaves two sons, Messrs. P. Allsop, of Frankton, and G. W. Allsop, of Auckland, and three daughters, Mrs. John Mitchell, of Rotorua, Mrs. S.. S. Clarke, of Herne Bay, and Mrs. J. Powell, of Queensland. There are .12 grandchildren and four great-grand-children.
