I drive an International light 4 S.P.O.R. model, and after doing 4.000 miles I broke a back axle. On taking it out I found it had been twisted off in the spline, and after replacing it the opposite axle broke in the same way. Altogether I have had about seven axles in 12 months, both left and right. I am a very fair driver, and have driven all makes of cars for 10 years. The fact that axles are being twisted off does not sho\f that these shafts are in any way faulty. Our experience teaches us that the twisting off of axle ends is entirely due to the conditions under which the truck is working, namely, overloading and heavy pulling conditions. The model S.P.D. is it one-ton truck, and undoubtedly in this case the loading is very much in excess of its capacity, and the truck is used in places where the pulling is exceedingly heavy. If we were acquainted with the actual conditions under which this is working, we could certainly tender further adW.R.—I have a 1927 Dodge, and I am having a lot of trouble with the radiator, which continually boils if J go over 25 m.p.h. for long. I haveliad' new valves put in and the timing altered, yet it still boils. Also, if I accelerate to pass another car, the tappetts start to squeak. I have had them adjusted but they are as bad as before. As ample lubrication of valve stems is afforded in the design of the engine, dry and squeaky valve stems can be attributed to the excessive heat, much above normal heat of the engine, which is generated when boiling commences. therefore, when the cause of the boiling or over-heating is eliminated, valve stems will function correctly. P.M.C. —I have a 91 model Overland, the hand-brake of which won’t work. There is plenty of lining there, but it does not grip. Also can a set of brushes be put on the generator without taking it off, and how? Can you 1 suggest a way? (1) The hand-brake is so designed that pulling it back four notches on the lever's sector should press the bands on the inside of the drums equally against the drums inner surfaces. Should you find that the hand brakes are not taking hold in the course of the lever’s travel along its sector, take up on the front pull rod with adjustable yoke and at the bottom end of hand brake lever. Operate hand lever and try both wheels to make sure that brakes are adjusted equally; if not, equalise them by adjusting the rear pull rod leading from amidships rocker shaft to rear axle. Also make sure that the two taper pins which connect the rear hand brake inner shaft lever to the inner cam-shaft are not sheared off. Make sure that the rear hand brake bands are free from grease and floated correctly. The hand brake bands must bo kept tree from oil and grease. Should these substances accumulate, they will glaze the surface of the brake lining", causing the brakes to slip whenever braking effort is applied. *■ (2) It will be necessary to remove the generator for the purpose of fitting three generator brushes. When refitting the generator it will necessitate retiming the engine. If battery ignition retime with Ne. I piston 9-32nds before dead centre compression stroke, ignition lever fully advanced, ignition points just breaking
