VISITS OLD COMMAND

PHILOMEL’S FORMER CAPTAIN Yesterday afternoon at the Devonport Naval Base, Admiral M. p. O’Callaghan, C. 8., C.V.0., renewed his acquaintanceship with the training ship Philomel which he commanded after she was commissioned in 1892. The Admiral left by the Aorangi today for Portland, Oregon, and will later proceed home to England. For a number of years the Philomel has been berthed at Devonport, ending her days as a training ship. She is commanded by Commander N. Clover who was once a cadet under Admiral O'Callaghan, who was in charge of the Philomel for three and a half years, during which she was at the bombardment of Zanzibar and the Benin expedition in West Africa. The activities of the vessel in these engagements are recorded on a scroll of honour on the ship and the admiral was decorated with the C.B.
