LIGHTHOUSE IN DANGER

EROSION AT BASE POSITION AT GISBORNE From Our Own Co't'rcspondent GISBORXE, Today. The Tuahine lighthouse, near Gisborne, is reported to be endangered bv the erosion of the rocky ledge on which it stands, according to a report presented yesterday to the Gisborne Harbour Board by its engineer, Mr. C. F. Marshall Smith. The report said:—"The Tuahine lighthouse was inspected by the actingharbourmaster and myself, and it was found that serious erosion of the rock at the base of the tower was taking place, so much so that the tower was rapidly becoming unsafe. I notified the district engineer of the Public Works Department as the representative of the Marine Department, and arranged with him to inspect the site with me. He has reported to the Marine Department the result of our investigations.” When the report was under discussion. the chairman, Mr. J. Tombleson, said that the board’s obligation was only to keep the light in running order and that repairs were the responsibility of the Marine Department.
