V.R.C. NATIONALS
BIG HURDLES TO BE RUN ON SATURDAY FANCIED CANDIDATES 1 The Victorian Grand National | Hurdle Race is to be run at • Flemington next Saturday, and the Grand National Steeplechase the t following Saturday. Prize money Cor hurdle races in Melbourne this "winter has been exceptionally well distributed and so sensitive is the Grand National Hurdle Race market that immediately a horse displays promising' form he enters seriously into the discussions on the Flemington event. Hitherto the Toolambool Hurdle Race at Caulfield j has generally provided a guide for the I Grand National, and consequently it [ was not surprising to find Swahilii at : the head of the Victorian lists on June j 24, because of his win the. previous Saturday. ; Recently Swahilii failed badly at I Flemington when accorded heavy sup- ‘ port and this was probably the reason i why he went out at a good price. He ) was allowed to settle down in the early ; part of the race, but had too much in ; reserve for the opposition over the ! concluding stages. Swahilii had 111* less than his i National weight, and he may also be i troubled by the extra distance it ! Flemington. , Won Again Swahilii won last Saturday with 111 b more than his National weight. Horoscope, who won a. few weeks ago at Flemington. was expected to do better than he did, but the fact that ho had 141 b more than his National weight may enable him to retain the early confidence of his admirers. Tirade. after finishing second to Horoscope, won in impressive style, and he also was heavily penalised as compared with the Flemington weights. In the Grand National he has 161 b less to carry. Gipsy Verse, from the Gippsla'nd district, essayed to win the Toolambool Hurdle all the way. and she battled on fairly well, considering that she made a couple of indifferent efforts at the j obstacles. Mosstrooper will be more at home over the longer journey at Flemington. I where he will have Tib less. Chumree. from Adelaide, ran an encouraging race to finish fourth and he. too, should improve in the meantime. (Chumree was killed 4 few days later.) He was the elect of and came home satisfactorily. The following is the order of favouritism in the G.N. Hurdles Swahilii. Mosstrooper. Bay of Biscay, Songift. Tirade. Gipsy Verse, Horoscope. Announcer, Flavedo, Olina, Rossgole. G.N. Steeplechase Ken tie., Mosstrooper. Namera, Sandhurst. Night Lark. George William, Invincible. Woomera, Good Whisky. I Seafit.
