MADE CONSTABLE SKIP
INTOXICATED MOTORIST FINED FELL IN POLICEMAN’S ARMS A very intoxicated young man fell into a policeman’s arms yesterday at Onehunga. A few minutes before this “touching” little scene the young man, who was driving a motor-car, made the policeman skip for his life as they met at a street intersection. This morning John Edward King, the young man, pleaded guilty in the Onehunga Police Court,to a charge of driving a motor-car while intoxicated. He was lined £2O and ordered to pay witnesses expenses, in addition to receiving a severe caution from the two Justices of the Peace, Messrs. W. N. Mclntosh and J. E. Green. Sergeant D. J. O’Neill told the Bench that at 5.25 p.m. yesterday King drove his car at a high speed, cutting the corner of Queen and Arthur Streets and almost colliding with Constable A. E. Jfinton who was crossing the corner at the time. The constable had to jump out of the way to avoid tlie car. The motor-car afterward pulled up in Arthur Street and here the constable found King so drunk that he just fell into his arms. Mr. W. P. Fennell, for King, said that his client was a respectable young man who supported a widowed mother. He had just bought a milk run and asked the Bench not to cancel his driver’s licence as his business involved the use of a motor vehicle. As the police also gave King a good j character lie was fined and warned j by the Bench.
