COALFIELD CRISIS
LOWER WAGE REJECTED; MINES WILL CLOSE THOUSANDS MADE IDLE Reed. 11.15 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. The Workers’ Industrial Union at Broken Hill rejected a proposal for a wage reduction of 17i per cent. The mines are now certain to close and 1,200 men will be thrown out of work, seriously affecting the city, where thousands are already unemployed.
