MOUNTAIN OF CLOTHING

RELIEF COLLECTED BY TRAVELLERS’ DRIVE DISTRIBUTION THIS WEEK A mountain of clothing and three large bags of silver containing about £1.500, bore testimony on Saturday evening to the willing spirit in which Aucklanders had contributed to the annual drive by the Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association. Two thousand workers were kept busy all day making calls at every house in the suburbs and in bringing goods to the central depots in 500 motor-cars and lorries. Gifts were not all from the houses of those comfortably situated in life. Many were the poor who contributed their mite for the aid of those whose need was greater. In many instances they will not be losers, as cases of poverty were noted and many who have been too proud to ask for relief will receive their' share from Saturday’s drive The travellers held an auction later in the day, making spirited bids for almost useless articles as though attending an auction at Christie’s. One man bore away a battered silk hat, which he had purchased for £5. About £3O was raised at the auction and a further £G gained by a collection taken when the shed on Central Wharf, where the goods had been piled, was open for inspection by the public yesterday afternoon. The work of sorting and distributing began today. The money is to be divided among the various charitable organisations, 10 per cent, every year being earmarked for the Blind Soldiers’ find Sailors’ Fund. The Drive Committee has asked the Government for a. subsidy, and this is now being considered by Cabinet. The committee which organised the appeal consisted of Messrs. C. C. Bach, R. Glover Clark, J. A. Cahill N. G. Cameron. W. H. Prentis, A. Thompson and W. M. Ingram. GOOD EFFORT IN NORTH Press Association WHANGAREI, Today. On Saturday the Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen held a cash and clothes drive on behalf of the poor and needy, and collected £2,000 worth of clothing and £l5O in cash. The expenses were £2.
