League Teams Even
CLOSER CONTESTS LIKELY
Marist to Meet Devonport MANY prominent players will be missing from the teams which take the field in the Auckland Rugby Football League’s senior A grade competition tomorrow afternooil. The seven All Blacks from Auckland now on the way to Australia will be much missed by their respective teams and it is likelv that the competition will be evened up as a result of this.'
Marist, at present heading the table, will be without its star backs, Gregory and Brisbane. It will meet Devonport tomorrow, and ns it will be almost impossible to fill the places of these men adequately, the leaders will have to look to their laurels. Shore showed against Ponsonby last Saturday that it is a much stronger team now than earlier in the season, and with Alf Scott in the van the Tyke forwards may meet their match. However, a close game can be predicted, with the balance, if anything, slightly in favour of the Greens. Ellerslie will play Newton on the No. 2 ground at Carlaw Park at 3 p.m., and the indications are that the young Newton team will have a good chance of winning. City plays Richmond at the Domain, where ;i fast game should be witnessed, and the Ponsonby and Kingsland-Athletic teams will travel to Mangere to assist the Mangere Club in its charity day effort. These are the third open, third intermediate and fifth grades. The second rounds in each of these grades will commence tomorrow. The positions of the teams at the end of the first round in these grades THIRD OPEN GRADE
The last matches in the first round of the second grade competition will be played tomorrow. The curtain-raiser to the main game at Carlaw Park will be a clash between the Richmond and Devonport second grade teams. Richmond has not been defeated so far this season, and the Shore men have had only one loss. A good game is expected. The Auckland Rugby League’s Management Committee will next week consider the annual request of the Junior Management Committee to have a junior representative team sent on tour. The actual place to be visited has not been proposed, but it will be suggested that the team go to Xgaruawahia. The Ponsonby third grade open team continues its remarkable record in the competition. It has now scored o total of 220 points in seven matches and had only 19 registered against it. One player has kicked no less than 37 goals, which is something of a record. Needless to say the team is undefeated so far. It has been granted permission to travel North and play a match at Wliangarei next month.
The Avondale fourth grade team will travel over to Taka puna tomorrow to play the team of the newly-formed Takapuna Club. This will be Takapuna's first match since its formation.
The Junior Management Committee is pleased to report that there were no cases of players being ordered off last Saturday. The committee indicted several severe penalties a short time ago and they have evidently had the desired effect.
The Kichmond-Ponsonbv third open match on Saturday was a good clean game, with Ponsonby showing Richmond quite a number of fine points which, if taken notice of, will be a great benefit to the Richmond team, which is composed of quite a number of first year players. For the forwards Johnston and Luke worked well. Baker is inclined to hang on too long, thereby spoiling some good movements. Edwards and B. Hansen, at live-eighths, are a real good pair, and if they had been backed up would have made a big difference to the score. Wright, on the wing, has plenty of pace and would make a good breakaway.
The Kingsland sixths are still on the losing list, having won only one match so far. They are improving each week, both in back and forward play. Although defeated last Saturday by Marist 23—0, the team put up a game fight, having only 11 players in the first half. Weavers, Mens and Holt were the pick of the backs, and if they used the cross-kick more it would get them more tries and improve their play. Bridges, Bright and Absolum were the best of a hard-working set of forwards, and were always in the thick of the play.
