GRAY AND ELLIS

BOTH WILL HAVE FOUR RIDES TOMORROW TE AWAMUTU AND ASHBURTON There will be the keenest interest in H. Gray’s riding engagements at Te Awamutu tomorrow, for he will need to pilot at least a couple of winners to maintain his lead of four over A. E. Ellis. At the Waipa fixture Gray will be aboard Standfast in the Woodstock Stakes Handicap. Flying Prince, in the President’s Handicap, 'te IToia in the Arapuni Handicap, and Silver Division in the Hairini Handicap. The first three have splendid chances of scoring if they receive just their share of luck in the running—a vital factor on this turning course with its furlong run home. Where Ellis Has the Pull Gray has a ride in each flat race tomorrow. On the other hand, although there are only three flat events on the Ashburton card tomorrow, A. E. Ellis in addition will have a ride in the Steeplechase, that is if Radiate is sound enough to go to the post, which is considered somewhat doubtful according to Riccarton reports. In addition to Radiate, Ellis will be on Fortalice (Moreton Hack), Royal Mint (Mayfield Handicap), and Rascal (Maronan Handicap). Both Ellis and Grav will therefore have four rides tomorrow, and the smaller fields at Ashburton will be a lot in favour of the South Island horseman. Te Awamutu Engagements The following are the riding engagements announced for the Waipa meeting •tomorrow: H. Gray.—Standfast, Flying Prince, Te Hoia and Silver Division. E. A. DERBY PROSPECT

VEILMOND WILL IMPROVE NEXT SEASON

Veilmond, who first saw daylight at the Koatanui stud, Wanganui, and who appeared to be unbeatable in two-year-old events in Sydney in the spring, hardly fulfilled expectations, but won £4,936 in stakes and finished second among the winners of his age at Randwick. Although beaten in the autumn the son of Limond and Veil never ran a bad race, and his Derby prospects for next season will be highly assessed if he winters well. George Price puts the polish on him.
