FILLY OUTSTAYS FIELD NORTHUMBERLAND PLATE RESULT United P.A. —By Telegraph Copyright Reed. 9.45 a.m. LONDON, Wed. The Newcastle meeting opened yesterday and was continued today. The big handicap event resulted: NORTHUMBERLAND PLATE A handicap of £1,500, with penalties; second horse £IOO, third £SO. Two miles. SHOW GIRL (Lady Ludlow), br f. by Son-in-Law —Comedy Star, 4yrs . 1 WEST WICKLOW (Lord Derby), ch g. by Tangiers—Bachelor's Dream, 6yrs 2 LUFFNESS (W. M. Cazalet), ch c, by Hurry On—Herodicaa, 4yrs .... 3 A dozen started. Won by a neck, third horse two lengths away. Last season, as a three-year-old, Show Girl won one race, and also notched a second and a third placing- out of half a dozen runs. Her one success was a dead-heat with that fine handicap horse Old Orkney in the Newbury Autumn Cup, two miles one furlong, in which t.he filly carried G. 4 against Old Orkney’s 9.0. West Wicklow’s best effort last year was when he won the Cesarewitch Stakes (£2,320) at Newmarket under 7.6 from 34 other runners, Lord Derby's candidate being at. odds exceeding a quarter of a century to one. Prior to this West Wicklow had scored in two modest handicaps: The Round Course Plate (244). 2 miles, at Kempton Park, and the Tottenham Plate (£127), one mile five furlongs, at Alexandra Park. As West Wicklow appears to be on the improve he may figure in other important English handicap events before the season concludes. It is significant that the Tangier’s gelding does not figure in the Goodwood Cup on July 31, but his owner has entered Bosworth, the recent winner of the Ascot Gold Cup. The third horse in yesterday’s contest. Luff ness, is owner by Mr. W. M. Cazalet, whose fine colt Paradine, ran second to Diolite in the Two Thousand Guineas last month. A few days before this event the owner allowed Paradine to drop out of the Derby! Last season Luff ness had only five outings, his best being a second in the Ormond Plate (£790), one mile, at Newbury.
