WAIPA MEETING
MIXED BILL ON SATURDAY A PRELIMINARY REVIEW The special winter meeting . held by the Waipa Racing Club kr £* Awamutu on Saturday, promises tk ?! very successful, and it needs onlv* weather for the financial returns tr. v splendid. The course is an ideal » weather one. with its sandy tui-r W?: that ensures the going being good ' *> it it does rain hard. All through the helds are exeelu the smallest acceptance being in V?' Te Awamutu Steeplechase, but *lv number should go to the post. are ten in the Hunters’ while the one hurdle race has a baker’s dozen. “ On the flat there are several 0 m standing: performers engaged, the on* events being nearly up to metropolita? standard. *** For the benefit of country reader the following list is offered horses that promise to be well ported on Saturday:— p ’ Ngaroto Hurdles.—Daylight, Mount trill Guide. Will it Be His Lucky Day ? MOUNTAIN GUIDE’S NEXT There is every chance of Jockey J. Sharkey making history when he climbs aboard Mountain Guide in the Ngaroto Hurdles at Te Awamutu on Saturday. This will be his first ride for some weeks: in fact, since he was injured when Quincoma fell at the autumn meeting of the Avondale Jockey ClubSecondly, he has a fine chance of riding a winner; and it was practical y under these conditions that he got old Glenotus, the bread and butter horse, home in the two steeplechase events at the Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s annual meeting. Providing Mountain Guide does tn trick it will signalise bis first succeM over hurdles after exasperating luck, no less than five seconds in a row having attended his efforts. It was areally hard luck he should develop soreness right on the eve of his Grea Northern Hurdles engagement, for n looked like making a hold bid honours. Mountain Guide is plenty of zest into his work on t“ track, and in bad gTound jumped we yesterday morning.
WAKO KING
MAY HAVE TWO RUNS AT TE AWAMUTU HURDLES AND STEEPLECHASE The fact of J. Burgess having made an engagement to ride Wako King Jr, both the Ngaroto Hurdles ana Awamutu Steeplechase at the WaJp* meeting on Saturday, points to tM horse fulfilling both contracts —a rare thing as jumpers go. Until he fell three furlongs from home —the last jump but one—'' King was going a fine race in “jGreat Northern Hurdles at Ellersa early this month, and he was tra " piling quite well, although obviou-b tiring. On that form he has a chance of success in his encounter over the week-end. particularly m inhurdles engagement, for he is an c , g perienced jumper and knows what required of him. Usually a horse wn can negotiate hurdles capably tin little- difficulty over easfor t iis reason the speedy son of b. _ Lupin has a rosv chance in the Awamutu Steeplechase, imtwithstand ing it will be his first attempt at branch of the game*.
