PLANE CRASHES ON ROAD
PILOT’S ATTEMPT TO LAND WITH WIND machine badly damaged Press Association ''kN ELLIN’GTOX, Tuesday, two-seater dual control De. Havil Vtnd Moth airplane crashed in Calahoj 3.45 p.m. today. The pilot, Mr. T machine was damaged extensively. Tin flight a week ago and was on his thiiV flight today when the accident occurred. Captain G. L. Stedman. instructor to the Wellington Aero Club had been tip with him this afternoor and had landings before that the north-easterly wind appearec to be about to change to the south While Mr. Mulligan was up alone th uitvd changed round suddenly and became squally, but the pilot attempts >o land as if it were still from the jorth-east quarter. He opened c*tr and rose again, but tried once more tc come down in the same direction. His wheels were on the ground ant he was actually taxi-ing when he apparently became afraid that he wa. going to hit the Miramar Golf Glut house. He endeavoured to rise agair and managed to clear the fence ant telegraph wires on the main road Then ho began a wild career over the house tops and turned toward a neighbouring hill, in an attempt to avoid The pilot managed to pass betweer the telephone, lighting and power wires •ind crashed on Calabar Road. Tin light landing wheel collapsed, and the machine swung round and eventually ended on its nose. Mr. Mulligan unstrapped himseli nd climbed out of the airplane uninjured. The machine is a new one and has been lent to the club by the Government. During the three weeks that the club has had it the airplane
