TO SHOW BIG TALKIES The latest theatre to instal talkies is the popular Orpheus Theatre, Station Road. Otaliuhu, which will reopen tomorrow June 26. The latest type of Western Electric talkie installation has been made, the theatre has been proved to have good acoustics, and the residents of Otahuhu are now assured of talkie entertainment on a par with city theatres. For the opening performance tomorrow the management lias secured a programme commensurate with the occasion. The chief attraction will be “Disraeli, •* a film which has been an outstanding success wherever it has been shown. The performance of George Arliss in the role of England’s great statesman of the Victorian era has earned him unstinted praise everywhere. A great deal of the action in “Disraeli” centres around the purchase of the Suez Canal shares from Egypt in the face of keen competition, from Russia. The incidents are formed into a thrilling tale replete with all the excitement of subterfuge and espionage. In addition a charming love story runs through the piece. Not the least interesting part in “Disraeli,” is the charming backgrounds of Victorian English life and the acting of every member of the supporting cast including Mrs. Arliss as Lady Beaeonsfield, Doris Lloyd as Mrs. Trevor the spy, and Joan Bennett as Lady Clarissa. Tho opening programme will also include several short talking and singing featurettes. During the next few weeks the Orpheus Theatre will present some of the finest talkies and colour productions available in New Zealand. Thev will include “Gold-diggers of Broadway,” "Paris,” “On With, the Show ” “The Argyl© Case,” “Desert Song.” “Noah’s Ark.” “Weary River” and “Or. Trial ” Among the forthcoming attractions will be the new pictures “Sally,” “The Green Goddess,” “The Show of Shows” and “No. No, Nanette.” A special matinee will be held at the Orpheus every Saturday afternoon at 2.30. The popular prices of Is and Is 6d have been established for the general talkie sessions.
