NORTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL
The ordinary meeting of the Northcote Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor. Mr. A. E. Greensla.de, presiding. The sum of £ 5 os was donated to the Auckland Harbour Bridge Association.
It was also decided to contribute the sum of £ 3 3s toward the public testimonial to be given by the residents of Northcote to Mr. P. C. Minns, who has been awarded a Rhodes Scholarship. A protracted and lively discussion took place when a letter was received from the clerk of the joint standing committee of the North Shore Boroughs’ destructor, stating that the final settlement of the dispute between the council and the committee regarding the operating costs of the destructor had been postponed till the next meeting of the committee. Or. George said this dispute had extended over two and a-half rears, and at the last meeting oi the council the Mayor and Cr. A. Facer were unanimously instructed by the council in committee to accept the terms offered by the joint standing committee, and to end this dispute. The Mayor had ignored the council’s decision and was responsible for the adjournment. The Mayor had no right to express his personal opinion: he had been instructed by the council unanimously, and it was his place to have carried out the instructions. Cr. Elliss also contended that the Mayor had ignored the council's decision. Cr. Facer, who, with the Mayor, is the council’s representative on the joint standing committee, also complained that the Mayor had ignored the council's instructions, and had not supported him. Other councillors also complained of the Mayor’s attitude. The Mayor denied that lie was responsible for the adjournment of the settlement of the dispute, and it was decided to obtain minutes of the joint
