CONGRESS MEMBERS PAID BY COMMUNISTS PROFESSOR ARRESTED Reed. 9.5 a.m. CAPETOWN, Monday. The African National Congress obtained permission to hold a meeting limited to members yesterday, but after two hours a police inspector, accompanied by three tear-gas bombers, ordered the meeting to stop. Professor Thaele temporised with the inspector and said: “I will speak to you outside after the meeting.” The inspector arrested Prof. Thaele, who was released on his own recognisances. Interviewed later. Prof. Thaele said: “Five hundred pounds has been placed at our disposal by the Communist Party. Our aim is a black South African Republic.”
