“A GRAVE CALAMITY”

TROUBLE AT ARAPUNI TRANSPORT BOARD CONCERN “Arapuni is too grave a calamity to merit criticism,” said the chairman of the Transport Board, Mr. J. A. C. Allurn, when the question of power supply for the new tram extensions was raised this morning by Mr. M. J. Coyle. When Mr. Coyle asked whether the trouble at Arapuni would embarrass the board at the completion of the extensions, the manager Mr. A. E. Ford said that no official communication had come from any quarter, but the Auckland Electric Power Board intended to supply requirements, but whether tlie supply could be maintained remained to be seen.. Mr. Allum moved the following resolution. stating at the same time that he had not wished to talk abqut Arapuni, but did so as someone alse had brought the question up. He moved: “That the board urge upon the Government the necessity of providing an alternative to Arapuni in order that there might be continuity of supply for Auckland.” The Transport Board could congratulate the Power Board on what it had done to assist consumers, Mr. Allum remarked. • If you say ‘provide an alternative to Arapuni’ the public may misunderstand. and get the idea you mean abandonment of the whole scheme,” cautioned Mr. L. E. Rhodes. Mr. Allum explained that: he meant that the Government be urged to link up the various stations in accordance with its intial plan, so that Auckland could keep going Mr. E. J. Phelan: There is always a sense ol" insecurity as- long as our eggs are all in the one basket. The chairman amended his motion to remove the possibility of misconstruction and it was carried.
