UNAUTHORISED MAPS
A.A.A. SUES WELLINGTON PRINTERS FULL CONFESSION FILED The copyright held by the Auckland Automobile Association over its official road map of the North Island was infringed at the end of last year by Messrs. Palmer and Mahood, a Wellington firm of printers, who issued a special map for the use of Wellington Automobile Club members. The Auckland body applied for an injunction to restrain the? firm from issuing further copies, and this eventuallj* led to the defendants filing a full confession and undertaking not to offend in future publications. In order not to embarrass members of the Wellington Club, the A.A.A. has offered to supply copies of its own map for their use. Many thousands of miles of travel by the touring manager and close hours of study went into the making of last year's North Island map, issued with special attention to the needs of motorists, and for use in conjunction with the A.A.A. road guide. To this end certain features were exaggerated and stressed in order to make the map intelligible to , the layman. It was through these details that the infringement was detected. The Automobile -Associations throughout the North Island, with one exception, draw on the Auckland body for supplies of maps and assist in giving information toward compiling the guides. Expenses of production are considerable, and the association could not afford to lose any profits due. Legal action was therefore taken. The Wellington Club was not connected with the case, and the friendly relations with other associations have not been broken, according To an official stateroca'.t issued by the AAA.
