BIRKENHEAD UNEMPLOYED
RELIEF COMMITTEE FORMED A public meeting was held in the Council Chambers. Birkenhead. last evening, to form a relief committee to help the unemployed in the district, the Mayor. Mr. J. P. McPhail, presiding. The committee will be known as the Birkenhead District Distress Re-, lief Committee. Mr. J. P. McPhail was elected chairman, Mr. F. Morris deputy-chairman, Mr. J. W. Cocks honorary treasurer and Mr. A. G. Jasper honorary secretary. The executive consists of Mesdames McPhail, Gilfillan, Utting, Hadlield, Taylor, Steele, Darlow and Miss Bell. Messrs. Hadfield, Roberts and Batty. Arrangements were made in conjunction with Mr. T. Farrell, the local representative of the Commercial Travellers’ Association, for the collection of clothing, etc., at the commercial travellers’ “drive” next Saturday. Mrs. Woods, secretary of the Women's Welfare League, said that £7 12s had been handed in for relief work as the proceeds of a dance. Mr. A. Fraser said he represented 217 returned soldiers of the district wno were willing to assist their unfortunate comrades ' and ' to work in with the relief committee.
