OLD, BUT PRESERVED
PHILOMEL’S HULL IN GOOD ORDER VESSEL BEING SCRAPED H.M.S. Philomel, the training- ship attached to the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, underwent a thorough scraping—the first in four years —at the Calliope Dock yesterday. The debris of marine growth, consisting of 25 tons of mussels and a “sward” of sea-grass a foot thick, was removed by 30 men. When scraping, which is done with implements resembling large chisels, is completed, the hull will be swept with strong iibre brooms and repainted. The shallow*ness of the water at the Philomel’s berth at the naval base contributed to the prolific marine growth during the past four years. The rubbish will be lifted out of the dock by u crane and transported out of thS harbour on a barge. Yesterday’s operations revealed that the hull is in splendid order. The ship is expected to come out of dock tomorrow.
