WORK AT ELLERSLIE

CANDIDATES FOR TE AWAMUTU USEFUL PERFORMERS Fast work at Ellerslie this morning was restricted principally to horses engaged at the Waipa meeting on Saturday. Number three grass track was available and the going was very soft, consequent on the heavy rain lately. Land Measure and Wild Country were set a six-furongs’ effort and at the end of a furlong were joined by Merry Lu, who kept company throughout with Wild Country. This pair j registered 1.22, the last half-mile taking 57 2-5. Land Measure unwound a lot of speed in the first few furlongs, but weakened badly at the finish. Bonny Day and Lady’s Boy were cantered in the centre preparatory to coming home together from the five furlongs in 1.10 1-5. They were not bustled, but did their work satisfactorily. Lady’s Boy has shown signs of soreness, but is improving and he worked fairly freely this morning. Maori Boy took the outside berth when accompanying Hannibal and Bennie over seven furlongs in 1.37 useful time on a dead track. The first furlong was carved out in 14 3-5, for three they made 40 4-5 and the first half-mile took 54 4-5. Maori Boy ranged alongside Hannibal at the post, while Bennie was several lengths back. He will require some racing before showing his best. Mountain Guide (J. Sharkey) and Quincoma (E. Garrett) were paired over two schooling hurdles, and after jumping these obstacles safely they repeated the manoeuvre in better style.
