Matthews and Hook, who left Lympne secretly on Saturday, were challenged by another young aviator, whose machine is now following them closely on the hop from Marseilles to Rome. Both machines are reported to be striving to lower Hinkler's record.

United P.A.. —Bu Telegraph Copyright Reed. 10.40 a.m. LONDON, Sunday. It is apparent that there is a rival for James Matthews, formerly a mechanic to Bert Hinkler, who accompanied by a rich young man named Hook, secretly left Lympne airdrome at dawn on Friday in an attempt to break Hinkler's record to Australia. *A young airman, IS'. King, in a light machine, set off from Heston airdrome soon after Matthews aud Hook. Both planes landed at Marseilles and left for Rome. Matthews was slightly ahead. Matthews and Hook only arrived at Lympne on Thursday night, and arranged to leave at dawn in a Moth plane named “Dryasel.” They carried a heavy supply of petrol, which made taking-off difficult. They expect to reach India in five days. Both men hold pilot's certificates, but their actual flying experience is not extensive. Their machine is not fitted with w'ireless. They spent last night at Lyons.
