AUSTRALIA DECLARES WITH SCORE AT 388 SURREY LOSES TWO WICKETS Reed. 10.5 a.m. LONDON, Friday. The cricket match between Surrey and the Australian team was drawn. Australia lost five wickets tor 388 and declared, and Surrey had lost two wickets for 249 in the second innings when final stumps were drawn. The Jackson-A’Beckett partnership had put on 100 when Woodfuil declared 45 minutes after the commencement. A’Beckett scored from nearly every ball, hut this was the first glimpse of the real Jackson, who exploited nearly all his shots. HOBBS UNSHAKABLE Hobbs and Sandham opened Surrey's second innings, facing a deficit of 226 runs. Grimmett, coming on at 14, dismissed Sandham in the first over. Hobbs batted well, but an hour’s play produced ouly 49. Barling and Hobbs both batted brightly after lunch, but the former skied a simple catch to mid-on. Hobbs continued in great style and reached 50 in 90 minutes. The side’s hundred appeared after 115 minutes. Frequent bowling changes failed to worry Hobbs and Shepherd, who scored steadily. Hobbs at S 3 was dropped off A’Beckett. The veteran slammed A’Beckett to the fence, reaching his century in 170 minutes. He is the second batsman to score 100 against the tourists. A’Beckett limped from the field with a strained left thigh. Hornibroolt, though slightly lame, fielded in his place. Shepherd plodded to 50 after 135 minutes. The batsmen then scored freely and their unfinished partnership of 182 is the biggest of the tour against the Australians. Hobbs batted for 230 minutes and hit 14 fours.
