Ponjola Outstays the Opposition

H.B. STEEPLES WINNER SURPRISES AT HASTINGS Special to THE SUN * HASTINGS, Friday. Exceptionally good conditions favoured the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club for the opening day of its winter fixture this afternoon. The track was dry and provided good going. The attendance was moderate, but the racing was good and patrons of the fixture did well as fas as the entertainment was concerned. z The totalisator handled £9,035, against £10,477, a decrease today of £1,742. Woodland Steeplechase Racing began with the Woodlands Steeplechase, for which Flying Swift was favourite at what appeared to be a good price. From an even start, Timipouri took the lead at the first fence from Hilcullus, Corneroff, Master Arch and Wyeford. Along the back stretch Hilculus took the lead, with the favourite. Flying Swift, lying last. At the sod wall Wyeford fell, and Sir Moments also bumped his rider. Leading into the straight for the first time the order was Corneroff, Timipouri, Hilcullus, Master Arch, Kovno and Winnagan. Timipouri and Hilcullus went to the front over the double brush, and entering the back Hilcullus took the lead, followed by Timipouri, Kovno, Winnagan and Flying Swift. At the sod wall Ivovno moved to second place, followed by the favourite, but on entering the straight Timipouri, Hilcullus, Flying Swift and Kovno was the order. Flying Swift ran off at the last fence, leaving Timipouri, Hilcullus, Master Arch and Kovno in the lea. A great finish saw Hilcullus forge through to win by a neck from Timipouri, with Master Arch a length further back. Kovno was fourth. Flying Swift was a certainty beaten. Both the first and second horses returned great dividends. Kidnappers’ Flat There was another surprise in the Kidnappers, Flat, for which Wilock was backed as though there was no possibility of his losing. At the release of the barrier, the favourite went to the front 1 from Lady Lucerne, Royal Songster, King Manu and Hystride. Rounding the top bend Brown Sugar came up on the outside to displace Lady Lucerne, who had dropped back. Entering the straight the order was Winlock, Brown Sugar, Royal Songster and King Manu. Evening Hero then came up on the rails to prevail over the favourite by a short neck, with King Manu a length further back. Hystride was fourth. Evening Hero did well to win, as he was not too well placed early and was badly interfered with in the straight by Winlock. Whakatu Hurdles Followers of the favourite crashed again when the Whakatu Hurdles came up for decision. Airforce was a decided favourite and Purseful next in demand. Early in the race Purseful took charge from Zippor, High Society, Airforce and Wliakaua. This order was maintained past the stands for the first time and along the back stretch, where Airforce went into third position. Around the top bend Zippor moved up to Purseful and Airforce dropped back. Zippor went to the front in the straight to go on and win comfortably by 10 lengths from Purseful, with Airforce half a length farther back. High Society was fourth. Zippor won so well that it will take a considerable rise to stop him. lie Is much improved. Hawke's Bay Steeplechase

In some respects the Tlawke’s Bay Steeplechase was the best race of the day. Red Bank took the lead but over the first brush Handy went to the front from Red Bank, Brigadier Bill, Matu and Ponjola. Passing the

stands the first time the order was Handy, Red Bank, Ponjola and Brigadier Bill, with Kowhatu well back. Along the bapk Red Bank dropped back and recovered at the top bend. Passing the stands the second time Red Bank, Ponjola and Brigadier Bill closed up on Handy, and along the back the order was Ponjola, Brigadier Bill, Handy and Matu. At the brush on the far bend three furlongs from home Matu fell and Handy came through to regain the lead. But in a great race Ponjola went ahead to win by two lengths, with Red Bank a neck behind Handy. Brigadier Bill was fourth. Ponjola won very nicely and will go on to Riccarton for the Grand National. How ho. will fare there remains to be seen, but he is a good jumper. Winter Handicap Hector Gray’s mount, Best Friend, went out favourite for the Winter Handicap. and it proved to ge a good thing. The favourite was jumped out smartly and was always going well. Along the back stretch Tahoma, Whakaari. Grattus, Best Friend, Adventus and Royal Court were in that order, but round the top bend Best Friend and Adventus challenged the leaders and in the run home Best Friend and Adventus came through. The former won by a length, half a head between second and third. Mothplane was fourth and after him came Tahoma. Grattus and Courageous. Hastings Handicap Bettors went heavily for Arrowhead in the Hastings Handicap, and he was i a bit unlucky. Taranto, Keen. Lordlike, Arrowhead and High Heather were the order when the field settled down. Lordlike finished excellently and won by well over a length from Taranto, who had half a neck to spare from Keen, while Potoaform did best of the others. Shortly was not too fortunate in running and Arrowhead had very bad luck in the straight. Heretaunga Handicap For the Heretaunga Handicap Paiko finished up favourite at a short price. Aston did not take long to hit the front, but Bold Front, who was always handy, came to the front in the straight and won by a head from Chopin, who carried his weight exceptionally well. Moutoa Treasury was third and the favourite, Paiko. fourth. Aston did not stay; he finished fifth. Queen’s Choice had a very unlucky run.
