TELLING NEW ZEALAND
REPORT OF LECTURE TOUR MISS MELVILLE’S WORK A most interesting survey of her ' first month's organising and lecturing ! tour on behalf of Now Zealand-ma-lv* goods was presented by Miss EL Mel i ville, honorary lecturer for the Aucki land Manufacturers’ Association at a meeting of the publicity committee , last Monday, j Miss Melville writes: — j I should like to report at this stage l for the information of the executive > of your association in connection vc it’i ' the organisation, preparation and arrangement for my lantern lectures on New Zealand-made Roods the * ground I have covered to date. I have written 121 letters, interviewed a large number of individuals and firms. and visited various ; factories, workrooms and warehouses. I 1 have compiled a set of 60 slides illustrating various industries. som> lof which have been supplied by tin firms concerned at their own expense. I hope to add to this set from time to rime. in this connection I may say tha' i his Excellency the Governor-General kindly gave me permission to make use of his advice to the people of the Dominion to use New Zealand-made clothing, etc:., as expressed by him at
a meeting of the Auckland Chamber of ; Commerce recently. I accordingly i had two slides made setting forth his Excellency’s views. Lady Bledisloe, at. my request, also j kindly sent me a beautiful photograph of herself, and a message written and ! signed by herself, urging the people ' to purchase home products, of which 1 : had two slides made. | By the good offices of various firms I have been supplied with an outfit of I New Zealand-made garments to wear ' when lecturiug. For these 1 have to thank Messrs. Ross and Glendining, j Ltd., H. Dearsley, Ltd., Kaiapoi Woollen Co., Ltd., Berlei (N.Z.). Ltd . i Macky, Logan, Caldwell, Ltd., Prestige ! Millinery Co., Ltd., W. H. V. Taint, j John Court. Ltd., Woolston Tanneries, i Ltd. (Christchurch), Empire Furriers. ] Ltd., and J. T. Lediard. The following articles have also been supplied for exhibition purposes at. ; lectures: —Stationery and Christmas I cards, by Collins Bros., Ltd.: set tooth- | brushes, Yock and Co., Ltd.; fur necklet and “raw” skin, Mooneys, Ltd ; lady's felt hat, Prestige Millinery Co ILtd.; lady’s underwear, Kaiapoi ! Woollen Co.. Ltd. and Ross and Gleuj dining: lady’s lumber packet. Kaiapoi i Co., Ltd.: lady's foundation garment - Berlei (N.Z.), Ltd.: lady's stocking-. I Macky. Logan, Caldwell, Ltd.; lady's • dress, W. H. V. Tainc; lady's suit case ] to contain exhibits. Palmer Collins and i Whitaker. I have compiled a considerable ! amount of statistics, data, and general j information, and arranged same in : lecture, as you are aware, at the Auck- ' lecture as you are aware, at the AuckI land Lyceum Club by special invitation |on June 4. Prior to the lecture I eni tertained twenty-two ladies to an "All | New Zealand Dinner,” which was the j subject of much praise. I should like | to say that it was most excellently I arranged, cooked and served, by Mrs. j Bell, the club manageress, and her I cook and staff. The lecture aroused l lively interest among the chib members,' and that interest is being main tained in my lecture campaign. For the lecture Mr. R. S. Lediard very kindly lent and operated his j lantern, without charge, and Mr. Allan { Lambourne lent his lantern screen. | Mr. Lediard is also generously lend- | ing me his lantern for some: of my ; country lectures. The second and third lectures I gave |at Wellsford and Port Albert ! respectively, on 10th instant. The | attendance at both places was affected i by very inclement weather, but there ■ were fair audiences notwithstanding, i and a good deal of interest was | aroused. The ladies readily signed j the pledge card, and they were much I interested in the exhibits of New Zea- ■ land-made articles. There is always tan inquiry as to where the articles | may be purchased, and what are the I retail prices. It would add to the value of the propaganda if I could be supplied with this information. I have arranged to give a series of lectures in the Bay of Plenty next ■ week, commencing at Tauranga on Mondav evening, the 16th instant, in i the Town Hall, when' the Mayor of Tauranga, Mr. Robbins, will preside, i an d the council will give its patronage !to the meeting. A New Zealand-made | goods week is being held at Tauranga I from the 14th to the 21st instant. I The other meetings will be as fol- : low- —Evenings—Matata. 17th June, IVliakatane. 18th. Waiotahi, 19th Opotiki, 20th. Waimana and Nukuhou North Women’s Institutes are also anxious to have a lecture, and I will i try and arrange an afternoon meeting i for them. I propose to return from Opotiki on Sunday the 22nd. by service . ear. which will be a thirteen hour tr>p. so I shall have a very strenuous week.
ernment has been compelled to impose an embargo on imports from there, and it now seems the time is rapidly approaching when New Zealand will have to protect itself by similar action, as it cannot, continue to be merely a buyer when the other party refuses to take any goods in exchange. Weaving our wool into clothes and making our skins and hides into boots and furs adds far more, in proportion, to the wealth of the Dominion than the production of the raw materials, and with the serious financial condition the country now has to face we cannot afford to neglect any single means of adding to our wealth, and we certainly must not send a shilling out of the country which we can keep here by spending it in buying our own made goods. Bring back prosperity by buyint New Zealand-made goods every time.
