LESS HIGHWAYS MONEY

VIEW GIVEN AT COUNTY LUNCHEON MEAGRE ACCUMULATIONS The opinion that the Main Highways Board would have less money this year than last year for distribution among local bodies, was expressed yesterday afternoon by Mr. M. H. Wynyard. Mr. Wynyard was replying on behalf of the Main Highways Board and the Auckland Harbour Board, to a toast at the luncheon given at the Grand Hotel by the new chairman of the Waitemata County Council, Mr. W. A. Bishop. The loan moneys sought would probably not be to the extent of those sought last year, and the accumulations the Main Highways Board had been accused of having, said Mr. Wynyard, had diminished almost to vanishing point. Rast year £1,100.000 was distributed, but this year the sum would probably be about £900,000. It had been intended to spend £IBO,OOO to £200,000 on secondary highways last year, but delayed maintenance apparently had been responsible , for the eventual expenditure of £ 300,000. It was hoped that secondary highways would not require the same expenditure this year. Mr. F. M. Waters, the chairman of the Manukau County Council, referred to the co-operation between the councils, and mentioned the large increase in the responsibilities of local bodies today, principally because of the effect of motor traffic. Mr. G. Trevithick, chairman of the Waitemata ElectricPower Board, said the co-operation between local bodies an instance in his board, which was interested in the welfare of its district as a whole. Toasts honoured were "The King,” proposed by Mr. Bishop: "Parliament,” proposed by Mr. Bishop. Mr. Mason in reply: "Bocal Authorities,” proposed by Cr. W. H. Potter, Mr. Waters in reply: "Kindred Bodies.” proposed by Cr. H. Paltridge, Mr. Wynyard and Mr. Trevithick in reply; "Government Departments,” proposed by Cr. A. E. Diprose. Mr. F. S. Dyson, district engineer of the Public Works Department, and Mr. O. N. Campbell, Commissioner of Crown Rands, in reply; "Past Councillors.” proposed by Cr. H. Day* Mr. A. M. Raing in reply; “The Staff,” proposed by Cr. F. Poynton, Mr. A. Murray, engineer, and Mr. C. A. Cawkwell, county clerk, in reply; and "The Chairman.” proposed by Cr. R. Gaskell.
