BISHOP AND BRICKBAT

DR. INGRAM SIGNS THE PLEDGE Tlie Bishop of London described the circumstances which led to his signing the pledge when he spoke last night at the annual meeting of the Loudon Diocesan branch of the Church, of England Temperance Society. “There is,” he said, “a dear old clockmaker who still looks upon me as a brand plucked from the burning. “When X was 23 I came across a temperance meeting in a Sussex town. Brickbats were thrown and one hit me, almost finishing my career. “1 said of the opposition that a cause carried on like that must be a bad cause, and so I joyfully took the pledge at tlie request of the old clockmaker. “I am thankful to that dear old man—nearly 90 now and still going strong—and i am convinced he did me a very great boon iu making me a teetotaller.” added the bishop.
