VOWEL VALUE
ASSET TO PLAYERS The greatest secret in the delivery of speech for the stage, talkie microphone, or merely for correct speaking is the knowledge of the value of vowels, If the vowels are concentrated upon, the consonants take care of themselves, and a pleasant effect is produced. That is the advice given aspiring actors and elocutionists by Emma Dunn, most famous of all stage mothers, who has been a star for 20 years, and who is now featured'in “The Texan,” a Paramount all-talk-ing Western, starring* Gary Cooper. “People always have said that I possessed a beautiful voice,” Miss Dunn explains, "but they merely arrived at that conclusion. It isn’t that my voice is beautiful. Rather the impression is produced because I have learned -how to make words sound well. I concentrate on the vowels and leave the consonants to take care of themselves.”
