SWIMMING AWARDS

NORMAL SCHOOL SUCCESSES Successful school swimmers received certificates yesterday, when Mr. A. Burns, chairman of the Auckland Education Board, and patron of the Auckland Primary Schools’ Swimming Association, Mr. E. McGregor, president of the association, Mr. C. F. Stratford, the secretary, and Mr. H. Moore, representing the Auckland Swimming j Centre, visited the Normal School. Mr. McGregor mentioned the excellent results of the swimming carnival held recently by the association. While only 200 certificates were awarded in 1925, in 1929, 5,068 certificates were distributed in 169 schools in the Auckland Province. The figure was about a third of the New Zealand total. Mr. Burns considered swimming should be a compulsory subject in the schools, and that every school possible should have a swimming pool. The benefits to be gained would justify the expense. Mr. Burns hoped baths would k e ava ilable at the Normal School before the passing of another season. A cup was handed to the girls’ team for success on aggregate points at the carnival, and 35 certificates were presented. Ralph Beare received the Birch < up for the school championship in boys breast-stroke swimming, and feonia Parkes, the Pettit Cup and a certificate for winning the girls’ breaststroke championship at the carnival.
