HQCKEYjREFEREES ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING HELD Tlio fortnightly meeting of the Auckland Hockey Referees’ Association was held last evening, there being a good muster of members. Several new members were elected, subject to their complying with the rules of the association. The total membership of the association has greatly increased this year and now stands at 40. The notice of motion to alter three of the rules of the association was carried.
The New Zealand Hockey Referees’ Association notified that a New Zealand theory examination will be held in Auckland on Wednesday, July J. It was decided to get all members to sit for this and Mr. A. Williams was appointed to supervise it. The secretary reported having received back the three two-inch rings sent for testing to the New Zealand Association and that as they are now officially stamped referees are requested to see that sticks that do not pass through the two-inch ring are stopped from being used. A letter from the Auckland Hockey Association stated that leather on the bottom of sticks is contrary to the rules. Referees are requested to se*> that this rule is enforced. It was also decided to request members to deal severely with trough play and undercutting. Complaints Were received that referees were late in starting the early matches. Members were asked to make it a point of being ready at 1.50 p.m to start the games. It was decided to write to Mr. L. C Kent, a life member of the association and wish him a speedy recovery from his illness. The first lecture, subject, the ‘ Offside Rule,” was given by Mr. E. J. Hewitt, whose paper and diagrams were of an interesting nature. Last evening Mr. A. Williams read a paper on “Position and Control.” This also was much appreciated The results of the Auckland theory examination were announced as follow: — A Passes. —Messrs. W. Grace A. Playle, A. J. Rankin and H. K. Rankin. B Passes.—Misses E. Jeffery and J. Adams, Mrs. Nicholson, and Messrs. G • Surman, N. Thornton and K. H Watts I C Passes.—Misses P. Phillips and (l L . ' : i and A. Rivers.
