PONSONBY V. TECH. OLD BOYS Ponies Now Leading
THE first round, ot the Auc competition vill conclude be played tomorrow afternoon. Eden Park will be the meet in; Old Boys. Fonsonby is now 1 one point over Technical and If Technical defeats Pons would be very interesting, be hard task. Although Fonnonhy will he without the services of McWilliams and Lucas, who 'will be playing in the test at Dunedin, on recent form it should be able to place another two points on the credit side of the ledger. Technical plays an enterprising game, but the difficulty experienced in finishing off its movements places the side at ... disadvantage when compared to the smoother running machinery of the Ponsonby back division. However, a fast and interesting game should result. . The curtain-raiser will be provided by University and City. The Varsity team is showing improved form, and tomorrow it should further improve its position. The other game at Eden Park will be between Grammar and Grafton, which should result in a win for Grammar. JUNIOR NOTES Admirable spirit. indicating that players over TaKapuna way liave the interests of the game at heart, has been shown by the Takapuna Club in amalgamating with North Shore, tor many seasons past Takapuna has fielded a team in the second grade competitions, but the existence of so manv club fifteens on the other side of the harbour made it difficult to assemble a team of playing strengtn up to the general standard of the other contestants. This season Takapuna was again in the field, but the first three or four games convinced the club of the futility of their position and so it joined forces with North Shore. Several teams have absorbed the former Takapuna players. An unfortunate mishap on Saturday has converted Scarborough, Grammar Colts’ popular skipper, from an active to passive player—on the sideline, probably for the remainder of this season A broken .bone in his leg will keep him off the field for several weeks, at any rate. Scarborough’s work as rover this season was outstanding and he was in fair way for a job in the reps. ... t s A good display was given by Varsity Colts on Saturday against Grammar Colts, but the students were outclassed in the backs, in which there is a decided weakness. The forwards are a solid, hard-working lot, fully up to standard. Robinson, the former Grammar schoolboy, who played for Grammar Colts in the game in which they defeated Ponsonby last season, is easily the best of the pack. Fast in the loose, lie follows up consistently and shows the way in dribbling rushes. Carson is also a solid type of forward who works hard in the scrummaging. College Rifles continued its winning way on Saturday by defeating Marist. bv nine points to nil. For Tykes Mueller was the best of the backs and Ricketts and Prendergast in the forwards. In the threequarter line Grammar Colts are exceedingly well served by Buckley and Savoury, both of whom are developing into fine attacking players, combining speed with determination in their running. The latter is a clever and elusive player and on Saturday performed very creditably when he was tried out in senior grade. SIX POINTS ALL SHELL PLAYS FARMERS One of the best house matches seen on Victoria Park for some time was the drawn game played yesterday afternoon between the Farmers’ Union Trading Company, Limited, and the Shell Oil Company, Limited. Both sets of forwards worked hard and the backs went very well indeed for scratch combinations. Shell took the honours for the early part of the match, but the Farmers came with a rush in the last spell. Just on the call of time Kirk (Shell) took a mark in a handy position but his kick at goal hit the post and bounced back into the field. A feature of the game was the deadly tackling by both teams. The handling, too, was good. The final score was Farmers 8, Shell 6.
